Cal Jillson received his Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1979. He taught at Louisiana State University (1980-87) and the University of Colorado (1987-95). Professor Jillson chaired the Department of Political Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 1989 to 1993, and served as founding director of the Keller Center for the Study of the First Amendment from 1993 to 1995. He joined the faculty of Southern Methodist University in July 1995, where he served as Chair in the Department of Political Science and Director of the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies from 1995 to 2001. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a frequent commentator on domestic and international politics. In 2004 he published a book entitled Pursuing the American Dream and in 2007 he published a book entitled Texas Politics: Governing the Lone Star State. In January 2007 he became Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of SMU's Dedman College.
